Simi Valley, California-based AeroVironment reported that the U.S. Army elected to exercise the first of three contract options with the unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) company. The $21.05 million t option under the sole-source, small UAS flight control systems, multi-year contract has AeroVironment providing avionics and data link upgrade packages to modify radio frequencies used by the Army’s existing fleet of the company's Raven tactical UAS. The company will deliver the upgrades over a two-year period.

Rochester, New York-based Vuzix Corp. announced on May 16 that it had received a follow-on development order from a global aerospace firm to build a customized commercial avionics waveguide-based head mounted display (HMD) system. The company, which specializes in manufacturing video-based eyewear, produces smart glasses and augmented reality (AR) technologies. The personal display and wearable computing devices offer users portable viewing and mobility AR solutions.
Under the latest contract, valued at $275, 000, Vuzix will provide the HMD system to its client by the end of the summer. The company received the first order in September and completed work on the contract in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Four companies have been tapped to design the next generation of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft for the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). They are Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation, The Boeing Company, Karem Aircraft Incorporated and Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation.
Current designs of VTOL aircraft have not been able to increase top speeds without sacrificing range, according to the agency. The VTOL Experimental Plane (VTOL X-Plane) “seeks to overcome these challenges through innovative cross-pollination between the fixed-wing and the rotary-wing worlds, to enable radical improvements in vertical and cruise flight capabilities,” the agency states.
General Electric Aviation, Grand Rapids, Mich., is being awarded a $13,587,842 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the repair of various avionics components of the tactical moving map capability, and the AN-ASQ-215 mission data loader systems used in support of multiple platforms: F-18, AV-8B, V-22, and the H-60 aircraft. Researchers at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, have developed a robotic batwing that could one day lead to more dynamic, dexterous and sophisticated wings for aircraft. The National Science Foundation, which supports the research, announced the breakthrough in its online publication Science Nation, along with a video. Unlike the wings of birds or insects, batwings are more like the human hand with many joints and skin, allowing bats to change the shape of their wings in-flight, researchers say.

The U.S. Air Force has awarded Rockwell Collins, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a contract to provide systems integration and avionics for the KC-10 Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) Cockpit Modernization Program. The contract, valued at more than $160 million over the life of the program, calls for Rockwell Collins to provide the flight management system, displays, data link communications and surveillance capabilities. The KC-10 aircraft is an Air Mobility Command advanced tanker and cargo aircraft designed to provide increased global mobility for U.S. armed forces.

RADA Electronic Industries Limited recently announced that it has signed a contract for avionics installation design, valued at nearly $4 million. This contract is part of an upgrade program for fighter aircraft run by a South American customer, a program for which RADA also supplies various avionics units. RADA will design the installation of all upgraded units in the aircraft as well as support the customer in the implementation of these upgrades.

In an age when information dominance is key to mission success, a unit traditionally tasked with evaluating and optimizing long-range, ground-based radar is evolving into a team with a data analysis mission.
Radar is a primary tool for defining what is occurring in U.S. airspace. A lone radar, however, provides a very limited view of an area based on location and specific environmental factors. A more accurate picture of an area of interest can be obtained when data from overlapping coverage of multiple radar sites is combined and analyzed.
