Textron Systems, Hunt Valley, Maryland, is awarded a $34,381,542 cost-plus-fixed fee modification to previously awarded contract N00024-14-C-6322 for engineering and technical support for the Unmanned Influence Sweep System Unmanned Surface Vehicle program. The Unmanned Influence Sweep System (UISS) will allow the Littoral Combat Ship to perform its mine countermeasure sweep mission.  UISS will target acoustic, magnetic and magnetic/acoustic combination mine types.

General Dynamics Missions Systems Inc., McLeansville, North Carolina, is awarded a $44,595,146 cost-plus-incentive-fee modification to previously-awarded contract N61331-11-C-0017 for low-rate initial production of the Surface Mine Countermeasure Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (SMCM UUV), also known as Knifefish. The Knifefish program is an ongoing effort to provide a UUV that detects and classifies undersea volume, bottom and buried mines in high-clutter environments. The Knifefish system is part of the Littoral Combat Ship Mine Countermeasures Mission Package and can also be deployed from vessels of opportunity. The low-rate initial production effort will provide the initial systems for the Navy to test and operate. Work will be performed i

The UISS is one of the systems, which will allow the littoral combat ship to perform its mine warfare sweep mission. I have an entirely new appreciation for the U.S. Army. On a recent project, service officials broke the government’s often too-slow acquisition model, and instead worked together with us, the contractor, to define its needs, develop the right hardware and software, and then support the Army’s internal development and integration. This experience represents a significant change in the Army’s typical way of doing business, and it taught us both a few lessons.

On the beaches at Camp Pendleton, Cory Stephanson, president and CEO, Broadband Discovery Systems Inc., launches a sensor-laden drone that collects data about buried mine materials while Dr. Rosemarie Oelrich, scientist, Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock, monitors the information on a handheld Android device.

The Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and industry have combined a one-pound quadcopter and Android technology to create an innovative way to detect buried and submerged mines remotely. The Mine Warfare Rapid Assessment Capability (MIW RAC) system features an ultrasensitive magnetometer sensor system to help sailors and Marines approaching a beachfront rapidly locate mines or other hazards prior to landing.

On behalf of the French Defence Procurement Agency and the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence Equipment and Support organisation, the Organization for Joint Armaments Cooperation (OCCAr) has awarded the Maritime Mine Counter Measures (MMCM) contract to Thales, in collaboration with BAE Systems and their partners in France and the United Kingdom. Initiated in 2012 under a cooperation agreement between the two countries, the MMCM program develops a prototype autonomous system for detection and neutralisation of sea mines and underwater improvised explosive devices.

The UISS seeks to provide a high area coverage rate in a small, lightweight package with minimal impact on the host platform.

Northrop Grumman, Annapolis, Maryland, is being awarded an $18,970,332 delivery order under a previously awarded contract (N61331-10-D-0009) for the procurement of field upgradeable kits and fleet support for conversion of the AN/AQS-24A systems to the AN/AQS-24B configuration in support of the Airborne Mine Countermeasure Systems Program. Work will be performed in Annapolis, Maryland, and is expected to be completed by March 2016. Fiscal 2014 operations and maintenance (Navy) funding in the amount of $18,970,332 will be obligated at time of award and will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
