Ka-band

The Boeing Co., Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was awarded a non-competitive, firm-fixed-price contract for high throughput commercial military Ka-band mission essential communications and internet service on E-4B aircraft under Air Force Global Strike Command control. The face value of this action is $26,634,982, funded by fiscal 2021 operations and maintenance funds.  The total cumulative face value of the contract is $197,223,871.  Primary performance will be at Boeing Global SatCom Services Network Operations Center, Kent, Washington. The period of performance is April 1, 2021, through March 31, 2022, with four 12-month option periods. This award is the result of a sole-source acquisition.

L-3 Communications Integrated Systems L.P., Greenville, Texas, was awarded a non-competitive firm-fixed-price contract to provide senior leaders and their support staff with high throughput military Ka-band communications while traveling via aircraft. The face value of this action is $5,781,475 funded by fiscal year 2018 operations and maintenance funding. The total cumulative face value of the contract is $240,000,000. Performance will primarily be in California and Washington. Proposals were solicited via electronic means, and one proposal was received. The synopsis/notice of intent was posted on June 15, 2018 on the Federal Business Opportunities (FedBizOpps) webpage.

Recent flight tests conducted by a combined team from the Electronic Systems Center, the Space and Missile Systems Center, MIT Lincoln Laboratory and MITRE Corp. have shown that the low-profile Advanced Multi-band Communications Antenna, installed on a wide-body aircraft, can effectively support high speed Ka-band and extremely high frequency (EHF) communications. The tests demonstrated that the antenna system meets needed performance characteristics, such as small size and weight, easy installation, consistent coverage in all directions and the ability to mount to the aircraft skin.
