Engineers and biologists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have developed a 3D “brain-on-a-chip” device capable of recording the neural activity of living brain cell cultures. This is a huge advancement in the realistic modeling of the human brain outside of the body.

Systems & Technology Research,* Woburn, Massachusetts, has been awarded a $28,680,552 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for research, development, operations and maintenance. This contract provides for the Dynamic Exploitation Modeling for Operational Systems (DEMOS) program, with an objective to implement automated tools for generating indications and warning and transition prototype systems to operational end users for a variety of missions. Work will be performed in Woburn, Massachusetts, and is expected to be complete by July 26, 2023.

Tau Technologies LLC, Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been awarded a cost reimbursement type contract with a base period contract price of $8,913,357 for directed energy modeling for cross-domain analysis. This contract seeks to advance directed energy technologies and weapon systems in engagement and mission-level analysis to enable data-driven wargaming, military utility assessments, and weaponeering. Work will be performed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and is expected to be completed May 31, 2023. Fiscal year 2019 research, development, test and evaluation funds in the amount of $300,000 will be obligated at the time of award.

Parsons Government Services, Pasadena, California, has been awarded a $17,769,011 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for Agent-Based Data Analytics and Persistence Technology. The scope of this effort is to generate input data; perform data modeling; research, design, develop, and implement novel algorithms, frameworks, information management tools, data stores and services; and integrate capabilities and services into robotic and content production systems. Work will be performed in Arlington, Virginia, and is expected to be completed Sept. 28, 2023.  This award is a result of a competitive acquisition and two offers were received.

Leidos Inc., Reston, Virginia, was awarded a $210,000,000 hybrid (cost, cost-plus-fixed-fee, and firm-fixed-price) contract for the procurement of contracted services that provide all personnel, equipment, supplies, facilities, transportation, tools, materials, supervision, and other items and non-personal services necessary to perform synthetic environment terrain and model generation services. Bids were solicited via the Internet with two received. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of April 10, 2023. U.S. Army Contracting Command, Orlando, Florida, is the contracting activity (W900KK-18-D-0020).

The Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency has begun a program to address an emerging conflict in a nebulous area between peace and conventional warfare. Dubbed the “gray zone,” actions in this space occur slower and are executed more subtly using social, psychological, religious, informational, cyber and other means to achieve physical or cognitive objectives with or without violence.

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), McLean, Virginia, is being awarded a $34,636,585 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract. Under the contract (HQ0147-17-C-0045), SAIC will work with Missile Defense Agency to evolve analysis capability to model the Ballistic Missile Defense System's (BMDS) expected performance in support of the director for engineering's Quick Reaction Team (QRT) support and analysis effort. The effort supports research, development and testing of the BMDS. The analytical support for the QRT will create products used by the Missile Defense Agency director; the National Command Authority; the combatant commands; and the U.S.

In this wired and increasingly virtual world, modeling and simulation play a key role in everything from testing new products to developing weapons systems and planning military operations. Although simulations have been important for decades, new technologies enable researchers and engineers to model software and hardware accurately down to the molecular level. Many research organizations also have a presence on the World Wide Web, which serves as both a medium and a means to experience and access research and testing data.
