Public safety agencies are seeking ways to reliably grant mission-critical information access to authorized users while also ensuring security and data integrity. Technical pilot projects sponsored by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency demonstrated cross-domain federated identity, credential and access management for secure information sharing for first responders in Texas and Tennessee.

The U.S. Defense Department is working toward a nationwide comprehensive public safety communications network that addresses most of the drawbacks facing emergency communications today. Local bases would offer the same capabilities for routine and critical emergency communications, and they would interact with state, tribal and local government systems.
Raytheon Company, Los Angeles, California, has been chosen by Los Angeles County to replace legacy emergency dispatch consoles with new ones that can easily be expanded for emerging public safety technologies such as Long Term Evolution, a high-speed, wireless broadband data network. Under a $12.5 million contract, Raytheon will replace all public safety communications consoles for the sheriff and fire departments. When the twin-screen consoles are in place, public safety dispatchers can see which units are available and have the shortest response time in handling both routine and emergency incidents. The changes will also provide increased interoperability between jurisdictions.
