Within this decade, commanders of combat units will have to plan and execute information activity, according to Army officials speaking at the August 17-19 AFCEA TechNet Augusta conference in Augusta, Georgia.

Appearing via video, Lt. Gen. Ted Martin, USA, commander, Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, said the new doctrine being drafted “as we speak” by Army officials “is forcing us to move into the future, and part of that future is information advantage.”

Gen. Paul Funk II, USA, commander of the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), outlined three training modernization priorities during his keynote speech at a February 16-17 AFCEA TechNet Augusta Virtual Solutions Series event. The initiatives include developing a prototype of the Army Training and Information System, updating ranges and training aids, and linking live, virtual and constructive training.

Maj. Gen. Neil Hersey, USA, commander, of the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence and Fort Gordon, said the center could potentially change its name, but that close cooperation among the centers of excellence essentially already provides the benefits of an information warfare center of excellence.

The change—if it happens—would follow the lead of the Army Cyber Command. Lt. Gen. Stephen Fogarty, USA, who leads Army Cyber Command, has been pushing to change the name to Army Information Warfare Operations Command. The service’s centers of excellence fall under the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).

A U.S. Army strategy document currently being developed and due to be published this year will emphasize the need to dominate in the information realm, Gen. Paul Funk, USA, commander, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), told the audience on the first day of the AFCEA TechNet Augusta conference in Augusta, Georgia.

Officials with the Army’s Materiel Command (AMC) have initiated discussions with Army Cyber Command officials to see if the command can play a greater role in the cyber arena, according to Gen. Dennis Via, USA, AMC commander.

The Mission Installation Contracting Command, Mission Contracting Office—Fort Eustis has awarded CGI Federal Incorporated, Fairfax, Va., a $143 million contract to support the core functions of the operational environment for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence (G-2). The contract has a one-year base with two, one-year option periods. CGI will deliver a range of analytical and technical services across 12 broad task areas, including training operations management; support for information, surveillance and reconnaissance integration; and data analysis, and modeling.

Pragmatics recently announced the award by the U.S. Army of a task order potentially valued at approximately $100 million. The award was made under the Information Technology Enterprise Solutions-2 Services (ITES-2S) contract for technology insertion in the Training and Doctrine Command Enterprise Classroom Program. Pragmatics will provide modernized instructional technology to support digital training in Army proponent classrooms for warfighters and Defense Department civilians. The Pragmatics team will survey, engineer, design, integrate systems, procure, stage, install, and test technology at classroom sites on Army installations across the country.
