Rome has several train stations. The biggest and most well-known stations are:

  • Roma Termini: most of the international trains arrive at this station. It’s the central station of Rome and it is located at the Piazza dei Cinquecento. This square is a stop for a lot of busses and taxis which makes it easy to travel to the center of Rome. Also the two metro lines of Rome get together here.  The information office for tourists can be found here as well .

  • Roma Tibertina: this is the second largest train station behind Roma Termini and is located in the North-East of the city. Some international trains arrive here. At this station you have a connection to metro line B and to a lot of busses who leave there. Furthermore, one can find plenty of taxis to travel to the city center .

  • Roma Ostiense: this station is located in the South of Rome. Also from this station there is an easy connection to the public transport to reach the center of Rome .

More information on trains:

ATAC (Azienda Tramvie e Autobus del Comune di Roma) is the bus organization in Rome. The traffic as well as the buses are often very busy which results in the fact that the trip might take longer than expected. Before entering the bus, one has to make sure to buy a ticket beforehand because it is not possible to buy a ticket on the bus. At the train station of Roma Termini one can buy a special tourist card. This card costs €3,10 and can be used for 1 day (or €12,50 for a whole week). With this card, you can travel as much as you want with ATAC. One can, furthermore, use this card to travel by metro. When travelling by bus, it is advisable to buy a map and overview of the bus lines. This can be bought at Piazza dei Cinquecento in front of the Roma Termini station.

By plane
Rome has 2 airports:

  • Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino: this is the largest airport and is located about 26 km south-east of the center of Rome. It has 3 terminals (A, B and C terminal) and is mainly used by large international airline companies.

Transfer from the airport:
A train to the Termini station departs every 30 minutes (the travel time is 30 minutes). Every 20 minutes there is a slower train (with the destination ‘Orte’ or ‘Fara Sabina’) to Tiburtina. This train stops at smaller stations. Between 23.30 PM and 05.00 AM, there is a possibility to take the night bus to the station of Tiburtina (01.15 AM – 05.00 AM).

It’s very easy to get a taxi to the center of Rome. Only take the official taxi with a taxi meter and please note that the airport surcharge is not included in the fare so that will be an additional cost .

More information:

  • Ciampino Airport: it is situated 12.0 km south southeast of central Rome,  just outside the Greater Ring Road,  the circular motorway around the city .

The Ciampino Airport was opened in 1916 and is one of the oldest airports still in operation. It was Rome's main airport until 1960. Since the opening of Leonardo da Vinci Airport, Ciampino has been handling almost exclusively charter and executive flights.

Airlines Served: Wizz Air, V Bird, helvetic, Transavia Airlines, Sterling, Ryanair, thomsonfly, easyJet, Air Berlin, Hapag-Lloyd Express, Carpatair.

Transfer from the airport:

A bus departs every 30-60 minutes to the station of Ciampino which takes about 10 minutes. After that, one can take a train to the Stazione Terminal. This train departs every 10-16 minutes and takes about 20 minutes.

It’s also possible to take a taxi. The drive takes about 40 minutes from Ciampino to the center of Rome and it will cost between €25 and €35, depending on the amount of luggage and the time of travelling.
