AFCEA Showcase is comprised of a series of episodes, each featuring up to five innovative small business members of AFCEA. Each company has five minutes to pitch its ideas and five minutes to answer questions from the panel of judges.

Judges are subject matter experts from a variety of backgrounds and related fields, providing thought leadership and suggested ways to proceed.


Steve Rixse, Vice President and Co-Founder of Ridgeback Network Defense, Inc.

Steve Rixse help found Ridgeback, a real time active defense product that uses deception to eliminate attackers moving laterally and provides a unique view of network vulnerabilities. His background includes executive management roles with Digital Equipment Corporation, Sterling Software and others including several start-ups. He has experience in developing markets in all areas of the Federal sector including the intelligence community with leading edge technologies. 

William A. Sheridan, Deputy Chief Ventures Officer, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA)

Mr. Sheridan is the Deputy Chief Ventures Officer at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). In this role, he oversees NGA’s innovation initiatives with agency stakeholders, government partners, industry and academia, focusing on the incubation and adoption of new ventures that accelerate GEOINT beyond the pace of adversaries’ capabilities. He also oversees NGA’s acquisition innovation strategies that further integrate industry capabilities across the GEOINT enterprise.

Cmdr. Maria C. Horton, USN (Ret.), CISSP-ISSMP, Cloud Essentials, IAM Chief Executive Officer at EmeSec

Cmdr. Maria C. Horton, USN (Ret.), is a recognized cybersecurity and compliance expert with hands on experience. She has presented information at conferences about cloud, FedRAMP, CUI, IoT and cybersecurity. She serves as a mentor to other small business start-ups providing real world feedback, encouragement and industry advice. Horton has published articles with Bloomberg News, SC magazine and the Huffington Post. In 2017, she joined Government Matters TV as a regular guest commentator addressing cyber, CUI and the due diligence implications for SMBs. Her company is one of 43 FedRAMP Third Party Assessment Organizations and holds four ISO certifications. EmeSec was awarded a Silver Stevie Award and a Gold Golden Bridge award for its #SimplifyCUIservices capability in 2017. While serving in the US.
