"Three Reasons To Support Cycle for STEM

A few days ago, I spent some time with three young men in grade- and middle-school. They had serious developmental struggles in their early life, but they are now doing well and were telling me that they are ready to go back to school. I asked them what were their favorite subjects, and I was a little surprised when two of the three boys quickly answered ?science.? When I asked why, they both credited a teacher who had clearly captured their imagination.

Teachers who nurture and develop an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are the foundation for our country?s future. I am proud to work for an organization that is a fervent supporter of STEM in the form of scholarships to those who want to teach the subjects and to those who want to have careers in those fields.

One thing that makes the AFCEA Educational Foundation unique is that it doesn?t just award scholarships to teachers in training and then forget about them. It continues to support its teachers for three years in the classroom with $1,000 of teaching tool money each year. So early career teachers have money to buy the things they need in the classroom to capture more imaginations right from the start. For more information about the AFCEA Educational Foundation STEM scholarship program, go to

I am participating in a 335-mile Cycle for STEM bike ride from Carnegie Mellon University to Georgetown University that the Educational Foundation is sponsoring in October. The purpose of this ride is to raise awareness and bring in funds for the AFCEA Educational Foundation STEM program. I ask you to support this initiative.

One other unique thing about the AFCEA Educational Foundation that I like to brag about: 100 percent of your money goes to students. The overhead deducted is zero percent!

So in addition to the three young men I told you about, there are three more good reasons to support the AFCEA Educational Foundation STEM Program. With your donation you?

As for the third child?s favorite subject?.. This year his answer is Physical Education. But maybe he hasn?t yet had the privilege of meeting that special teacher who will capture his passion for STEM too.

Thanks for your consideration."
