Each month, this feature highlights news from AFCEA’s various committees.

AFCEA’s leadership has made diversity at all levels across the association a top priority—creating a director of diversity role at AFCEA International headquarters, launching IDEA, its Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access initiative and now creating the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee.

AFCEA’s main objective is to ensure programs and initiatives reflect the fabric of our country and establish a sense of belonging for everyone. Addressing diversity means understanding that each member is unique while recognizing and embracing individual differences regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age and physical abilities.

IDEA aims to provide a culture in which all members can connect, contribute and be themselves. A top priority of AFCEA’s newly formed Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee is to ensure leaders and members across the chapters understand we all play key roles in helping to realize these goals. We all share the responsibility for developing communities in which every member can contribute.

A future goal is to highlight our members’ hard work and dedication during a ceremony to commemorate contributions and successes. This will open up opportunities for company sponsorships.

The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee is here to serve as a resource to support chapters and organizations in building inclusive communities. The new committee is made up of members across the organizations who represent all levels of leadership. AFCEA President and CEO Lt. Gen. Susan S. Lawrence, USA (Ret.), has established an executive advisory council to work in concert with the committee to address critical issues that affect our community. The committee includes representation from all interest groups and leadership across the country.

Alvie Johnson serves as the chair of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee.

Each month, SIGNAL Magazine publishes a feature in the Committee Corner to highlight news you can use from AFCEA’s various committees. Committee leaders should submit entries to sjontz@afcea.org. Happy writing.
