Joint Information Environment Discussed

In October, Kerry E. Kelley, director of command, control, communications, and computer systems and chief information officer, U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM), Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, spoke to the chapter regarding STRATCOM's role in the Defense Department Joint Information Environment. Kelley discussed the inefficiencies of how networks were stood up in the 80s and 90s, which prompted the Defense Department to manage these systems more centrally. Ultimately, the Defense Department chief information officer was made responsible for creating a consolidated information environment. Kelley touched on building a cloud computing environment and the prospect of the new STRATCOM facility becoming a regional center. She discussed how GAP CIE is being used within the Joint Information Environment and how the information is being used to update the STRATCOM commander on a daily basis. Kelley touched on the future possibility of using the Joint Information Environment for task and file management.
