MONTGOMERY CHAPTER CHAPTER - Feb 01, 2013

Recruiting Future Information Technology Leaders

In February, the chapter partnered with Lee High School's Information Technology Academy Advisory Council and Alabama State University in hosting Camp IT, a recruiting event designed to attract incoming high school students in pursuing information technology (IT) and engineering careers. More than 250 local middle school students participated in mini-camp sessions specializing in computer-based training software, personal computer assembly, Web design, robotics, cloud computing and cybersecurity. Charisse Stokes, chapter Education Foundation director, and Dr. Joe Besselman, chapter president, kicked off the event by highlighting the benefits of pursuing careers in IT and engineering. Also speaking were IT Academy instructors Alesia Ruffin and Kevon Chesson; and Mark Peterson, author of “Guerrillapreneur,” a small business strategy for “David's wanting to defeat Goliaths.” The chapter provided custom t-shirts for each student and two iPods for a raffle event. The chapter proudly continues its role in educating youth on the benefits of IT and engineering careers.
