ALAMO CHAPTER CHAPTER - Jun 20, 2013

Chapter Welcomes AFMOA Commander

Brig. Gen. Sean Murphy, USAF, commander of the Air Force Medical Operations Agency (AFMOA), took the stage as keynote speaker June 20 at the chapter's luncheon. Gen. Murphy, a board-certified pediatrician, shared views on the future of medicine and patient care in an increasingly joint service environment. Gen. Murphy leads consultative support for more than 43,000 personnel and 75 medical treatment facilities with a $6.1 billion budget. Worldwide, some 2.1 million beneficiaries are served by AFMOA. In a free-flowing and often humorous discussion, Gen. Murphy shared insights and anecdotes from his personal background, thoughts on mentorship and views on the role of technology in medicine. Medical IT, along with cyber, education and training and the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance fields, comprises one of the chapter's core constituencies. Among the more eye-opening revelations was the disclosure that pediatricians treat vast numbers of U.S. military servicemen and women. At ages 17, 18 and 19, the youngest of those sent to fight in the nation's wars still qualify, medically, as pediatric cases. In response to audience questions, Brig. Gen. Murphy emphasized that in his arena, medicine should drive technology, rather than allowing technical advances to drive and dictate the way personal care is delivered. But he also said he believes that the Department of Defense health care system, when acting in a truly aligned and joint frame of mind, could drive advances in standards of care because it is not constrained by the civilian health care payment system. In other business, the chapter recognized renewing sponsors KGS and New Horizons Computer Learning Systems. Membership chairman Tom Allen also recognized a new corporate member, Mission First.
