HAMPTON ROADS CHAPTER CHAPTER - Jul 09, 2013

Admiral on Bold Alligator Exercise

Rear Adm. Ann Claire Phillips, USN, a native of Annapolis, Maryland, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received her commission through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps in 1983. Her current assignment is commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Two. Adm. Phillips delivered a thought-provoking topic to the chapter membership in July titled “From Bold Alligator to BALTOPS: Technology in Today's Navy.” Bold Alligator 2013 was a Navy and Marine Corps-led synthetic exercise involving more than 3,500 personnel from 16 countries and Strike Force NATO. The 11-day exercise was designed to improve the Navy and Marine Corps' fundamental ability to integrate and execute large-scale operations from the sea. This year's exercise focused on integrating and streamlining staff planning, and command and control procedures of the Navy and Marine Corps teams from Expeditionary Strike Group 2, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade and Carrier Strike Group 12. The BALTOPS 2013 exercise included sailors from 10 nations working side-by-side with personnel from partner nations, both on land and at sea, becoming familiar with military operating procedures and practices of participating nations. The participation in exercise scenarios involved mine countermeasures, submarine and surface operations, and maritime interception. Through BALTOPS, we unite the skills, experiences and forces across our nations to plan and execute a robust, challenging and realistic training environment, said Adm. Phillips, who led this year's exercise. This forum provided a valuable opportunity to develop strong, productive relationships to enhance regional maritime safety and security.
