MONTGOMERY CHAPTER CHAPTER - Nov 20, 2013

IT Academy Students Advance in Competitions

In November, local students from Robert E. Lee High School's IT Academy participated in two challenging science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-centered competitions: VEX Robotics and CyberPatriot. The IT Academy was well represented by a 12-student team who competed in the initial VEX Robotics Qualifier round and took an impressive second place overall. The team now advances to the next round of competition scheduled to take place in February 2014. Additionally, two teams of five IT Academy students participated in the CyberPatriot Competition at Auburn University-Montgomery, and both teams exceptional performances have allowed them to press forward and continue into the second round of competition scheduled to take place in December 2013. The IT Academy students success in both the CyberPatriot and VEX Robotics competitions truly is a testament to the hard work and tenacity of students and teachers within the IT Academy program, and the chapter's Education Foundation is proud to support their efforts. The Education Foundation provides various grants and other donated monies to support continued program growth and fund the purchase of vital classroom equipment and upgrades, such as new computers, iPads and software. Currently, the chapter is looking forward to providing additional support via assisting with the upcoming Camp-IT and Job Shadow Day events in February 2014. Overall, the chapter congratulates the IT Academy on its recent competition performances and looks forward to future successes as the teams advance.
