LOS ANGELES CHAPTER CHAPTER - Apr 21, 2016

The Changing Nature of the Space Business

The chapter welcomed Col. Michael A. Guetlein, USAF, director of the Remote Sensing Systems Directorate assigned to the Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles Air Force Base, California as its luncheon speaker in April. He is responsible for a $48 billion space systems portfolio and leads a program team of more than 14,000 government and contractor personnel. He leads the development, deployment and sustainment of the nation's space based infrared detection, targeting and tracking systems, as well as the sustaining and fielding of affordable space and terrestrial weather systems. He presented an overall status of the remote sensing programs he is leading and emphasized the changing nature of the space business. He discussed the impacts to our systems based on other countries access to space and how the Chinese anti-satellite program changed opinions on space being considered a benign environment. He noted that now our systems must be resilient to these new challenges.
