The chapter held a conference titled, "The growing role of meteorology: news, midterm forecasting and the Italian role' in June at Casa dell'Aviatore in Rome. Lt. Gen. Antonio Tangorra, ITAF (Ret.), chapter president, introduced the event, which was organized due to the continued interest from last year's edition. He remarked on the relevance of the new European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) coming to Bologna, Italy in 2019. Col. S. Fiacconi, ITAF, opened with a speech about the value of meteorology, underlining the need for a strong correlation between public and private sectors for aviation, transportation and environmental monitoring applications. "CINECA's role to support research and technological innovation," was the speech by S. Bassini, CINECA, one of the main European computing centers, with its own high performance computing (HPE), supporting research activities in both public and private sectors. L. Pacifici illustrated "The new era of meteorology with IoT,"underlining this new approach can be used for automation, digitization and cost saving of meteor stations. Lt. Col. P. Rosci, ITAF, presented "Observation network upgrading for the Italian Air Force using the Standard Weather Station model: technical aspects and dual use of the network." In his speech, "Continuous training of the meteorological personnel," G. Tisselli, ENAV, focused on the training needs of personnel, to provide precise information to the air navigation operators. F. Marzano, CETEMPS, presented, "The value of weather radar meteor: opportunities and drawbacks," highlighting the need to integrate all Italian weather radars into a unique networks of systems and skills. F. Desiato, ISPRA, in his speech "Services for Operation climatology," presented the different types of available services, mainly user-driven, for satisfying the needs of different users."Thunderstom and wind shear: decision making and sensor management systems," given by P. Rossi, VAISALA, presented a new generation SW for weather radars named IRIS, which guarantees safety outside and inside the airport. R. Rizzi, Bologna University, talked about "Atmospheric physics and meteorology courses in Bologna," introducing the first master's degree in physics of the earth activated in Italy by the university. The speech "Automated radiosondes: operational benefits" by Antony Giles, EURELETTRONICA, underlined the resources needed to operate a radiosonde station, describing its automation activated at FEA Base at San Pietro Campofiume. G. Coppini, CMCC, presented "Sea conditions forecasting and modular marine models," describing the strategy for achieving optimal sea conditions awareness and some case studies in the Mediterranean Sea. Finally, C. Cacciamani with his speech, "The role of meteorology for environment and security," illustrated how accurate weather forecasting can play a significant role in environmental protection and security.
