Chapter Supports Torrance Airport STEM Event

This year the chapter provided a grant to the Torrance Airport Association (TAA) to help further their school-age science technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) outreach activities. Jim Gates, former chapter president, informed the board that TAA had ramped up their activities to help get kids and teens involved in STEM studies and on educational tracks to fill technical jobs when they grow up. He requested the chapter's help to get a new exciting STEM event off the ground. Specifically, TAA uses the general aviation businesses and other educational resources at the Torrance Airport as a great source of opportunities to get kids interested in aerospace engineering and aviation science. This year, TAA held a hands-on STEM event for local school kids at the Torrance Airport. The event was well attended, with about 100 students participating from four different Torrance schools. All of the kids toured the Collings aircraft and many also visited the control tower. Robinson Helicopter provided an R-22 and a mock-up of the rotor control system and Monica Campos explained how it all worked. Personnel from the Los Angeles Air Force Base taught a segment about rocket technology. If you would like further information about TAA, you can visit their web page for Friends of Torrance Airport at www.torranceairport.org or their Facebook page. Anne O'Brien, TAA's STEM program director, briefed the outcome of the STEM event and thanked the chapter for helping make it possible at the luncheon in June.
