ABERDEEN CHAPTER CHAPTER - May 08, 2018

Scholarship Dinner Celebrates Academic Excellence

The chapter held its eighth annual scholarship awards dinner on in May at the Water's Edge Event Center in Belcamp, Maryland. The event offers a chance to recognize and celebrate local students and educators who are recipients of chapter STEM grants and scholarships. This year, the chapter presented three Science Teacher Toolkit Awards; five scholarships, tools, equipment and mentors (STEM) grants; two Community College Transfer Scholarships; and six high school graduate scholarships. For this academic year alone, the chapter has obligated more than $80,000 in awards, which includes scholarships, educator awards and funds donated to STEM programs for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford and Cecil Counties. This total includes a new $8,000 Cyber Defense Certificate Scholarship for Harford Community College, formally announced and accepted at the awards dinner. Since its inception, the chapter has provided more than $354,000 in education funds. The average weighted GPA for the student award winners was 4.53. Guest speaker Larry Muzzelo, deputy to the commanding general, U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command, delivered a keynote speech stressing the importance of STEM in the Aberdeen Proving Ground community. He discussed the Army's plans to develop the next generation of STEM leaders, given the current aging workforce. The induction of the chapter's new executive committee for 2018-29 rounded out the night. The chapter congratulates all the award winners and extends a sincere thank you to all attendees, honored guests and others who made this event a possibility.
