MONTGOMERY CHAPTER CHAPTER - May 22, 2018

Education Foundation Luncheon Honors Chapter Scholarship Recipients

The chapter hosted its annual Education Foundation luncheon in May to recognize and reward nine outstanding students from the Montgomery, Alabama, River Region. The luncheon took place in conjunction with the chapter's annual information technology conference, the Montgomery Information Technology Summit (MITS), at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center in Montgomery. The luncheon drew a full house from industry, government and the military. Charisse Stokes, director of the chapter's Education Foundation, presided over the luncheon with the assistance of Chapter Vice President Col. Kyna McCall, USAF. Richard Aldridge, program executive officer for Business and Enterprise Systems, Maxwell Air Force Base, Gunter Annex, Alabama, not only attended the luncheon but also helped hand out awards during the ceremony. The chapter awarded $7,500 in scholarships as part of its High School Information Technology Summer Internship Program. Three graduating high school seniors were each awarded a $2,500 scholarship, a new Dell laptop computer and a 10-week summer internship with an information technology company valued at $3,500. Array, ICS and eSA are all corporate sponsors providing internships to students. The three recipients were John Scott Dennis from Wetumpka High School, Henry Petters from Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School and Harris Washington from St. James High School. The chapter's Education Foundation supports students at all levels. Six rising college seniors major in STEM degree programs at local universities each received a $5,000 award as part of the Education for Industry Scholarship Program. Recipients were Asia Mitchell, Nyaesia Thompson and Zach Bennett of Alabama State University; and Emily Cosgrove, Luis Sarmiento and Kaela Williams of Auburn University at Montgomery. Before the luncheon, the chapter hosted its annual fundraiser golf tournament at Wynlakes Golf and Country Club. The event generated more than $150,000 in sponsorships and donations that directly aid the Education Foundation's efforts by providing STEM-related grants, scholarships and other support to local students in financial need. The chapter congratulates the award winners and thanks IBM, the Education Foundation luncheon corporate sponsor for the sixth consecutive year. The chapter also extends sincere thanks to all corporate sponsors that donated generously to support the Education Foundation's efforts and enabled the chapter to provide grants, scholarships and support to hard-working students and local educational institutions.
