GREATER OMAHA CHAPTER CHAPTER - Oct 10, 2018

Assistant Superintendent Discusses STEM Initiatives

At the chapter's luncheon in October, Dr. Robert Moore, assistant superintendent, Bellevue Public Schools (BPS), apprised the chapter on the school district's approach to STEM education. Moore talked about the Bellevue mission of being "champions for children." He touched on their vision of shaping the future through engagement, innovation and creation of a culture of belonging. Leaders are focused on developing a true STEM culture across the school district. Moore said to aid this effort, they need to capitalize on the four C's of 21st century learning: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Moore elaborated on Project STEM, which involves professional learning for 75 elementary teachers and administrators over a 3-year period. He commented on the district earning a $1.3 million Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grant through the National Math and Science Initiative. Garrett Sims, district partnerships facilitator, BPS, discussed the newly formed BPS Connect program and how it was modeled after similar programs nationwide. At the conclusion of the presentation, Moore challenged attendees to get involved with an after school STEM program.
