Air Force Leader Discusses Cyber Operations

In February, Col. Isreal L. Askew, USAF, director, Cyber Operations Integrated Planning Element (CO-IPE), US Cyber Command located at U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, spent time discussing CO-IPE with the chapter. Col. Askew provided background on the USSTRATCOM CO-IPE environment. He touched on his 29-member Air Force (AF) team that remains unfilled. Their mission provides direct support to USSTRATCOM to plan, synchronize, integrate and de-conflict cyber operations. Their element serves as a forward extension of Joint Force Headquarters-Cyber (JFHQ-C) AF and JFHQ-Department of Defense Information Network. Also, as a forward element, it allows them to effectively integrate within USSTRATCOM's battle rhythm. Col. Askew touched on the 15 core functions they provide. Col. Askew showed an organization chart to depict his organization and how personnel are integrated within the J-2, J-3 and J-5. Col. Askew talked about his organizations in the future as they continue to grow and integrate within USSTRATCOM. Col. Askew concluded by discussing cyber key terrain-that it's difficult to define due to prioritizing requirements, and how dynamic the changes are-it's like a moving target.

Both individuals have storied military, civilian and contractor service records with years of involvement in the chapter. They both have been a tremendous influence upon the footprint of IT in USSTRATCOM and around the globe.
