STEM Teacher Scholarships FAQ

Q1. Who is eligible for the AFCEA STEM Teachers Scholarships?

A1. Students actively pursuing a graduate degree or credential/licensure for the purpose of teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) subjects at a U.S. middle/intermediate and high schools are eligible. (For complete explanation of eligibility requirements, see here)

Note: Undergraduate students are not eligible to apply.

Q2. What does “overall GPA” mean?

A2. This means your grade point average of all coursework to date in the undergraduate, graduate, or credential/licensure program in which you currently are enrolled.  For graduate students, it would be the overall GPA of your first two semester-equivalent courses completed in the higher education program.

Q3. What is the deadline for applications?

A3. Applications are due by midnight U.S. Eastern Time on April 22, 2016. NOTE: All supporting documents including letters of recommendation and transcripts are also due at this time.

Q4. How do I apply for the AFECA STEM Teaching Scholarships?

Q5. My university will not send transcripts through email or online.  What should I do?

A5. Obtain an official or Student Copy of your transcript issued by the school Registrar’s Office (online print-outs are not accepted) and send it by mail to arrive by the deadline date to: AFCEA Educational Foundation, 4400 Fair Lakes Court, Fairfax, VA  22033.

Q6. Am I eligible if only a few of my credits are earned through distance learning or on-line classes?

A6. Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Contact the AFCEA Educational Foundation office by email.

Q7. My reference did not get an email with instructions on submitting the letter of recommendation.  How can my reference submit a recommendation?

A7. Ask your endorser to first check the spam folder.  If the email still cannot be located, ask them to prepare the letter on official letterhead, sign it and scan it into pdf format, then send an email to arrive by the deadline date.

Q8. I am enrolled in a master’s program but have not started classes yet. Am I eligible?

A8. Graduate candidates must be enrolled in at least their second semester and at least two (2) semester-equivalent courses per term by deadline date, to be eligible for the Stem Teacher’s Scholarship.

Q10. Who is AFCEA International?  What is the AFCEA Education Foundation?

A10. AFCEA International, established in 1946, is a non-profit membership association serving the military, government, industry, and academia as an ethical forum for advancing professional knowledge and relationships in the fields of communications, IT, intelligence, and global security. The AFCEA Educational Foundation works closely with AFCEA chapters, raises funds, and provides leadership, guidance, and rewards to help motivate more students to become scientists, engineers, teachers and information technology professionals. The Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing educational incentives, opportunities and assistance for people engaged in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines focused on information technology, cybersecurity, telecommunications and electronics supporting the defense, homeland security and intelligence communities. In 2009 the AFCEA Educational Foundation, together with AFCEA Chapters, awarded more than $2 million in scholarships and grants. The AFCEA Educational Foundation has been granting scholarships and grants to college students in STEM disciplines for 30 years.
