Securing DoD Facilities for the 21st Century: Activate Strong Privilege Management to Strengthen Physical Access Control AFCEA International
03/26/2014 physical security program, privilege management, control access authorizations
Controlling access to Department of Defense (DoD) facilities and ensuring the safety of those who work there has never been a higher priority. The DoD physical security program includes active and passive measures designed to prevent unauthorized access to personnel, equipment, installations, information, and to safeguard them against espionage, sabotage, terrorism, damage, and criminal activity. Ensuring that only the right persons gain access, at the right times, for the right reasons is vital to the security of these facilities in the 21st century. In this webinar, ADM Steve Abbot, USN (Ret.), former Homeland Security Advisor to the President, former Deputy Commander in Chief, U.S. European Command, will discuss the risks associated with using a DoD credential as a ┐flash pass┐ to anonymously gain entry to secure facilities. More importantly, relying solely on any credential, issued at a prior point in time, to determine current physical access privileges fails to leverage the current status of an individual, which might dictate the remanding of such privileges. The security process needs to be transformed to incorporate and rely on lifecycle privilege management for physical access, which is an imperative for DoD facilities. This transformation must be accomplished without reinventing the wheel and wasting critical mission dollars. Given the large number of people (or identities) who legitimately require access to DoD facilities to accomplish their mission, the ability to cost effectively and efficiently control access authorizations through automated processes is a ┐must┐ for DoD physical access control. In addition, collecting and analyzing all individuals┐ access related data across the DoD enterprise aids in identifying risk. Analytical tools are needed to allow security operations to allocate and focus resources on high risk identities and locations, while automating the routine.
