Recruiting Young Servicemen to AFCEA by Vandenberg-Central Coast Chapter

Mike Anderson, President of the Vandenberg-Central Coast Chapter, explained that a best practice of their chapter is to recruit chapter officers and Young AFCEANs from the military. By targeting lieutenants, they get the hard- chargers excited about a project they can own, and show off their leadership talents. For the young officers who need some guidance, it is an opportunity to mentor them in leadership that they may not get in their day-to-day job. For the NCOs, it is more information that they can put on a quarterly award, plus it allows them to get their younger enlisted involved by them leading from the front.

Matching Curriculums with Industry Needs by ArkLaTex Chapter

Our IT personnel have represented the chapter through a close relationship with Louisiana Tech's Computer Science faculty while mentoring graduating CS students, helping grade senior projects, as well as, teaching mobile applications development classes for the iPhone in their CIS Systems Analysis and Design course. This has also been hugely instrumental in helping local/regional colleges/universities develop specific curriculum to support an ever-growing IT workforce pipeline requirements/needs in NW Louisiana and throughout Texas.

Continuing Education Lunch and Learn Program by ArkLaTex Chapter

The Young AFCEAN Program chartered a plan and developed a free Continuing Education Lunch and Learn Program. Through this series, credentialed military members were able to maintain compliance with Department of Defense (DoD) requirements for the Information Assurance Workforce and non-military members received credit for training hours to maintain their information technology (IT) certifications. Since the program's start, members of the local community acquired over 80 hours of continuing education credit. Technical experts in the region presented topics such as Hacking and Social Engineering to a diverse audience of local military, DoD civilians and contractors, local IT professionals, and educators. Furthermore, through ties made at these events, the Young AFCEAN Program Chairman secured a sponsorship arrangement with the local co-working organization, CoHabitat, in Shreveport-Bossier City that allows the ArkLaTex Chapter to have access to office space for meetings as well as providing the chapter a location for members to work special projects in one of CoHabitat's specially designated "roving desk" work areas.
