Congratulations to The Cyber Edge Writing Award Winners

Winners focus on 2024 theme of Mitigating Cyber Threats Today and into the Future.

Announcing this year's The Cyber Edge Writing Award winners.

Each year, SIGNAL Media gives individual thought leaders an opportunity to share their knowledge with the AFCEA International community. This year’s theme, centered around mitigating current and future cyber threats, brought dozens of insightful submissions. Following careful consideration by judges, winners have been named and will be presented with engraved awards and monetary prizes at the annual TechNet Cyber conference in Baltimore, June 25-27.

Retired U.S. Navy captain George Galdorisi takes third place for his piece about social engineering in military operations, which can cut both ways and used advantageously to enable warfighters at all levels to prevail in the cyber-realm. Galdorisi currently serves as the director of Strategic Assessments and Technical Futures for the Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific.

Writing on the Army’s urgent need to change current information technology (IT) inventory systems, compliance and account management, second place went to Maj. Jonathan Harbin, USA. Maj. Harbin is a native of South Carolina and a graduate from the University of South Carolina Upstate. He has 22 years of service and currently serves as the FUOPS OIC for the 35th Corps Signal BDE. His suggestion to mitigate cyber threats included the merge of several databases into one for units to remain accountable and cyber compliant.

First place winner Sam Richman is an associate principal solution architect at Red Hat, specializing in zero trust and Department of Defense ecosystem partnerships. With more than 20 years of experience in U.S. government enterprise IT, Richman wrote about human tendency to jump head-first into new technologies with minimal forethought. The idea, Richman explained, results in technological complexities, therefore calling for a need to slow down, ask the hard questions and field less technology—not more.
