Chapter Hosts Conference on Physical and Digital Identities

The "Physical and Digital Identities, Uncompromising Security! Encryption and Its secrets: How To Manage Them and Make Them Inviolable" conference, organized by the chapter and member N.I.D.O., was held in June at the Casa dell'Aviatore in Rome.

Lt. Gen. Antonio Tangorra, ITAF (Ret.), chapter president, gave the welcoming remarks. Stefano Penna, sales director for Italy of the Cyber Security Division, N.I.D.O., illustrated the offerings of the Cyber Security Division with particular reference to securely using the normal mailboxes by adopting an SSL (secure sockets layer) certificate for each user, increasing security from phishing, spoofing and "man in the middle" attacks. This allows the identification of the sender, the possibility of being able to choose with a single click whether to communicate in plain text or end-to-end encrypted mode and the transfer in encrypted mode of any file (even large ones) by defining at the time of sending which recipients will be able to read and decrypt the file.

Nadia Angelini illustrated how it's possible to issue certificates for the security of all information technology "objects" that are part of the data network through Entrust's Certification Authority. Implementing a strong certificate (even with elliptic curves) makes it possible to secure all encrypted communication more strongly.

Afterward, Giulio Gennari, sales consultant at Entrust, outlined the three basic principles of data protection: integrity, availability and confidentiality. The value isn't protection from theft but the certainty that, even in cases of theft, unauthorized copying or espionage, the data cannot be read. He then summarized Entrust's proposal for data security and management of all encryption keys, illustrating its most significant aspects.

Penna again took the floor for Digital Onboard and Identity Access Management (IAM). The proposed solutions aim to ensure access to infrastructure or data networks with the highest possible level of "certification" of the identity. He spoke about N.I.D.O.'s proposals, which can be divided into two macro areas: multifactor authentication/IAM and digital onboarding. A powerful artificial intelligence engine allows access to the unique user's "digital signature" that, with biometric recognition systems, completes the tools of multiple authentication modes.

Penna discussed the link between physical and digital identities in "Digital Onboarding," which is the most advanced system for identifying a person through their smartphone. Using a special application, this system reads the electronic ID and compares it with the person holding the smartphone.

The last speaker was Giorgio Mestici, who illustrated N.I.D.O.'s expertise in the secure documents market from the electronic identity card to the defense multiservice card, as well as electronic passports, health cards and driver's licenses. Lastly, he described N.I.D.O.'s innovative proposal in the world of FFF 3D printing, LayerLoop, which represents the right combination of the needs of a production system and the need to contain space and costs, such as a small 3D printer capable of producing large objects.
