Description: |
AFCEA Chapter of Rome decided to dedicate the last
event of 2022 to the theme of the "digital twin" -
the digital twin, counted among the five emerging
trends that will guide technological innovation for
the next decade. It is not difficult to imagine how
digital twins that will incorporate big data,
artificial intelligence, machine learning and the
Internet of Things will become fundamental in
Industry 4.0.
The digital twin is not an economic theory, but an
industrial methodology that is implemented through
the development and study of models using virtual
reality. The first to coin the expression "digital
twin" was Michael Grieves, researcher and professor
at the University of Michigan. The digital twin is
therefore a virtual replica of physical, potential
and actual resources equivalent to objects,
processes, people, places, infrastructures, systems
and devices, with various areas of application.
Ideally, a digital twin contains all the information
of the physical object through a three-dimensional
representation of its aspects at the mechanical
level, at the geometric level and at the electronic
level, i.e. embedded software, micro software,
product data, data associated with sensors and
actuators, increasingly pervasive. Thanks to real-
time virtual mirroring, engineers are able to
simulate the behavior of complex systems, managing to
predict and prevent mechanical failures, thus
reducing inefficiencies and costs.
They are used for various purposes, especially in
defense in production and for predictive maintenance.
For Industry 4.0, this approach is the state of the
art. With digital twins it is possible to test and
understand how the systems (e.g. weapon systems,
ships, planes, satellites and vehicles) and the
products to be created will behave in a wide variety
of environments, using the virtual space and the
simulation. The advantages are many, starting from
the ability to easily access data from many different
sources, aggregate and view them through a single
centralized, synchronized and shared dashboard, being
able to add contextual information.
In this context, with the usual attention to new
technologies and their effects, AFCEA Chapter of Rome
organizes an event entitled "Digital Twin: a new
ecosystem for defence". which will take place on 7
December at the Transmissions Command at Cecchignola
, with the aim of providing a popular presentation of
the digital twin illustrating its fundamental
characteristics and potential applications.
Therefore, the event will see the involvement and
comparison of the academic and institutional world
with the industries of the defense and aerospace
sector, which will present the state of the art and
possible evolutions in the technological and
operational fields. |
