The "Joint Production of US-made Manpad STINGER
Anti-aircraft Missiles Under License", the first
project in which Turkiye actively participated in
a consortium with NATO member states, was started
in 1982 by the MND Technical Services. The first
delivery of this 100% offset-based project started
in 1992 and continued until 2000. While working on
a project to meet the Low Altitude Air Defense
needs of the Turkish Army in the years when the
SSB was newly established (1985), the Ministry of
National Defense proposed in 1998 that the
Pedestal Mounted STINGER (PMS) project was much
more suitable in terms of cost and effectiveness.
So, the Low Altitude Air Defense project was
canceled, and it was brought to Turkiye under the
production responsibility of ASELSAN, managed
jointly by the technical staff of the SSB and the
Ministry of National Defense. |
