Covilha Student Chapter
Faculty Advisor: Mr. Jorge M.R. Silva

Chapter Focus
Founded in 2013, the Covilha Student Chapter was established in the AFCEA Atlantic Region (Europe) under the umbrella of Portugal Chapter. It is located at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), in Covilha, a city in Western Portugal. Student activities are focused on development of innovative vehicles and evaluation and benchmarking of complex infrastructures and systems. Ongoing projects are related with themes studied at the Department of Aerospace Sciences, including optimization of propulsive systems, multidisciplinary optimization of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), morphing wing structures, autonomous aerials vehicles (Long Endurance Electric Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)) and solar aircrafts. Internationally, students participate in competitions as Air Cargo Challenge (ACC) and Shell Eco Marathon. Since 2014 some members are involved with the development of a new air vehicle (airship) for the transportation of people and goods, surveillance, recognition, defense and advertising. Since 2015 some members are engaged with a start-up in the RPAS area, the Airborne Projects. The students participate in Portugal Chapter activities and European initiatives too.
