Army Leaders Emphasize Importance of Electromagnetic Spectrum Capabilities
U.S. Army leaders are stressing the significance of bolstering capabilities in the electromagnetic spectrum field. To address this, crews are amending programs and technologies the branch recently unveiled to help the Army gain an advantage in the space.
More specifically, Army crews are working to update and enrich the Terrestrial Layer System-Brigade Combat Team (TLS BCT) and the Multifunction Electronic Warfare – Air Large (MFEW-AL) programs.
Furthermore, Army leaders announced the TLS BCT manpack system will be the main electronic warfare and signals intelligence device for the entire BCT field, a major development that came out of the TLS BCT rapid prototyping program. Each BCT official is expected to obtain a manpack system by fiscal year 2028, according to Program Executive Office Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors (PEO IEW&S) personnel. Lastly, crews will add vehicle agnostic modular adaptor kits to the manpack device, according to PEO IEW&S officials.
As for the MFEW-AL program, leaders will begin to focus on taking advantage of off-the-shelf solutions from the private and public sectors, according to PEO IEW&S personnel. This may lead to industry and government teams delivering capabilities more quickly to the force.
These developments come after Army leaders released the Electromagnetic Warfare Strategy in March 2025, according to officials with the PEO IEW&S.
