The Development of Data Warrant Officers in the U.S. Army

Officials say they are entertaining this possibility.

The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) is looking into developing data warrant officers with the goal of helping boost professional growth and retaining data experts across its ranks.

Accomplishing this would require some changes in how military ranks are educated and informed, according to Gen. Gary Brito, commanding general, TRADOC. Gen. Brito was the morning keynote speaker on Wednesday for TechNet Augusta 2024, held in Augusta, Georgia.

“The mission analysis that is ongoing to include a type of training that somebody might have to have: is it an ASI [additional skill identifier], a career management field or a brand-new branch for warrant officer and officer? [That is] to be determined,” said Gen. Brito. “With that, comes some complexity. We have seen in the last 10 to 15 [to] 20 years that we have had to develop some new skill sets, ASIs or training to give that level of capability.”

Another change TRADOC is looking into is gathering expertise from both the military and civilians, said Gen. Brito.

TRADOC is already analyzing the possibility of developing data warrant officers, but before more information can be released, officials need to gather the proper data to ensure an informed decision is made.

“I kind of sense yes, but I’m not going to get ahead of the analysis that is ongoing,” said Gen. Brito. “The command has the mission to bring this back to the chief, working with our headquarters [Department of the Army] team as well to make sure that we get it right.”
