Eighty Years of Connection, Innovation and Mission: AFCEA and SIGNAL Magazine
Eighty years ago, as the world emerged from war, a small group of communications professionals made a simple but lasting decision: stay connected. In 2026, AFCEA International and SIGNAL Magazine stand as the result of that decision—an enduring partnership that continues to link people, ideas and technologies in support of global security.
A Foundation Built on Collaboration
In 1946, military and industry leaders recognized that the collaboration forged during World War II should not fade during peacetime. They established the Armed Forces Communications Association to preserve relationships, share expertise and advance emerging technologies. From the beginning, AFCEA served as a neutral forum grounded in trust so that government, industry and academia could engage openly and ethically.
As technologies evolved, so did AFCEA, with the organization becoming a hub for exploring global networks in the 1950s and 1960s, then satellite communications and space capabilities in the following decades. Electronics was added to the name in 1954. In recent years, the community-wide conversation has expanded to include artificial intelligence (AI), cloud architectures, zero trust, data strategies and space operations. Across every domain, AFCEA continues to serve as a connector, bringing together the stakeholders needed to tackle increasingly complex challenges.
In 1979, the association established a foundation to support future communications and electronics engineers and scientists. The AFCEA Educational Foundation supports STEM students and educators through scholarships, grants, internships and other events.
Over time, AFCEA has expanded its reach and influence internationally, now with more than 140 chapters of volunteers serving their communities around the world.
From Conferences to Community
AFCEA gatherings have transformed into major convening points for the entire national security and defense technology community. Events such as the series of TechNet conferences and a range of focused symposia bring together thousands of participants to address challenges across the spectrum of command, control, communications, cyber, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. These forums serve as collaboration environments where ideas become solutions and partnerships are forged.
Both conference attendance and AFCEA memberships have increased dramatically in the past few years. Core events such as TechNet Cyber, TechNet Augusta, TechNet Indo-Pacific and WEST continue to set records for attendance year after year.
“For 80 years, AFCEA has stood at the intersection of technology, innovation and mission—bringing together government, industry and academia to tackle challenges that no one organization can solve alone. In today’s environment of rapid technological change and global complexity, I firmly believe that if AFCEA did not exist, we would have to invent it. Its relevance and strategic importance have never been greater,” said Lt. Gen. Bruce Crawford, USA (Ret.). Crawford has indicated that AFCEA will continually evaluate how it can deliver greater value, accelerate opportunities and partnerships, enhance learning and collaboration, and engage the future force.
SIGNAL Media: Capturing the Conversation
SIGNAL Media is a trusted source of reporting on technologies related to national and global defense. Early issues focused on the Army Signal Corps and documented postwar systems and infrastructure. Over time, it expanded to cover satellite communications, computing, networking, the internet revolution, and now, cybersecurity, quantum computing, nanotechnologies, robotics and artificial intelligence.
Notably, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and AFCEA’s renowned conferences were no longer an option, SIGNAL’s webinars continued, providing thought leadership, news and information to our community while adding significantly to AFCEA’s coffers. In 2020, AFCEA and SIGNAL kicked off the annual The Cyber Edge Writing Award sponsored by MANTECH. The award allows experts across academia, industry and government to share their insights and ideas with the broader community and mirrors the AFCEA mission to foster dialogue and seek solutions for some of the nation’s toughest challenges.
Additionally, SIGNAL Magazine, which initially covered the Army Signal Corps, has evolved into a family of media formats, including the magazine for in-depth reporting, analysis and thought leadership; the website for breaking news and blogs and, more recently, video reporting, podcasts and webinars.
Informing the Mission
SIGNAL’s role remains clear and consistent: provide accurate, relevant and timely information that supports mission success. Its award-winning journalism connects complex technologies with real-world applications, offering readers not just awareness, but understanding. In a fast-moving environment, that clarity is essential.
At its best, SIGNAL does more than report—it bridges the gap between innovation and execution, ensuring that decision-makers and practitioners can act with confidence. SIGNAL fills a unique niche in defense journalism, providing news, information and analysis designed to help the national security community succeed with its diverse mission set.
SIGNAL Media plays an important role in helping readers understand the technologies, policies and decisions shaping national security and the defense of our nation. Our reporting reaches government leaders, military personnel, industry professionals and researchers who depend on credible, unbiased information to do their jobs.
SIGNAL has published through the Cold War, the Space Race, the digital revolution and now, AI’s reshaping of every industry it touches, including journalism. That longevity reflects the trust built over decades through honest journalism in service of a mission that genuinely matters.
Looking Ahead: Growth and Reach
As AFCEA enters its ninth decade, growth remains a priority. Expanding membership—particularly among students and early-career professionals—will help ensure a strong and well-prepared future workforce. Increasing participation in events broadens the conversation and strengthens collaboration. And just as important, AFCEA continues to deepen its role as a strategic partner with government, industry and academia across the community.
For SIGNAL Media, the path forward centers on audience growth. Expanding internationally reflects the global nature of today’s challenges, while engaging younger readers ensures continued relevance. Through digital platforms and evolving formats, SIGNAL Media is positioning itself to meet readers wherever they are.
A Shared Future
This anniversary is primarily about the individuals who have sustained the mission. For decades, members, volunteers and editors have contributed their time and expertise, building a culture rooted in collaboration and professionalism. That culture remains a defining strength.
Both AFCEA and SIGNAL Media understand that change is constant. Artificial intelligence, quantum computing and advanced networking are already influencing how missions are carried out. In this environment, the ability to connect people and share insights is more valuable than ever.
