Targeting Minorities & Women with STEM Support by Montgomery Chapter
Joe Besselman, President of the Montgomery Chapter, suggested
that AFCEA steer its sponsorship of STEM money to minorities
and women ¿ a niche in the larger world issue of STEM
necessities. In the Montgomery area, STEM teachers teach
predominantly minorities; and there are robotics programs in
the four surrounding counties with high minority populations.
The chapter also gives scholarships to particular minorities
studying engineering at nearby universities.

Online Judging Tool for Scholarships by Atlanta Chapter
To maximize participation in judging our chapter¿s
scholarship applications, AFCEA-Atlanta built a tool on the
chapter¿s portal for viewing and submitting judging scores.
Judges were provided with the username and password to access
the tool. Once in the tool, judges could view each
application package and then submit their judging sheet,
including their name and then rank ordering the top 8
nominations. This enabled a large group of judges (approx
15-20) to grade the applications when convenient for them and
without the challenges of providing judging packages via
hardcopy or email as well as protecting the privacy data in
these packages. This approach has worked out very well for
our chapter.

Student Clubs by At-Large Chapter
The new initiative of forming student clubs is taking hold in
the Southwest Region. Reaching out to college and high
school ROTC units and STEM-related high school and college
divisions is helping us "green the force". We should have
five clubs up and running in the near future.
