Official Outlines Next AI Areas of Focus Within the U.S. Army
Regarding artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge, Lt. Gen. Jeth Rey, USA, acknowledged that crews must start asking questions and thinking about how to apply AI to edge capabilities.
“How can we fundamentally get after AI at the edge?” Rey said at the 2025 Association of the United States Army Annual Meeting & Exposition. “Do we need it? We need to ask those questions. Are we going to be able to use it at the edge? And if so, where in our stack? Is it actually on the X? Is it on the Y where the division is located? Or is it on the Z, where the corps is? But where do we actually utilize AI to ensure that it really works for us?
Secondly, the industrial base is another area personnel need to investigate to see if AI capabilities could be a good fit to help revolutionize and boost efficiency, according to Rey. U.S. Army officials want the ability to move from the fort to the port to the fight and to receive notifications alerting crews that they need to resupply. Modernizing the industrial base could help accomplish those tasks, according to Rey.
Lastly, Army officials are looking to bring AI to the homefront. They want to revolutionize their old, outdated systems by integrating AI onto their existing platforms, Rey said.
