The NRO Adjusts Its Orbit

The space surveillance entity evolves for a more complex threat environment.

Like most other space-focused agencies, the National Reconnaissance Office is exploring its role in regard to cislunar space, the area in space well beyond geosynchronous orbit to the moon. Credit: NRO

Building Highways in the Lower Skies

NASA investigates the possible flight safety constructs needed for urban air mobility.

NASA’s Advanced Air Mobility National Campaign is a comprehensive effort to develop and test vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicles, systems and related technology, including creating the procedures for the future airspace management of VTOL vehicles, air taxis, cargo delivery and other advanced aircraft concepts into the National Airspace System. Even NASA itself is pursuing a VTOL aircraft. Credit: NASA

DARPA Selects SpaceLink to Connect Space Domain

DARPA Selects 11 Teams in First Phase of Space-BACN

The research agency is beginning to develop an optical intersatellite communications terminal.

DARPA is pursuing R&D of a platform under which government and private sector satellite constellations can be able “talk” to each other in an inter-satellite network setup, as part of its new Space-BACN Program

Introducing the SpaceVerse

The U.S. Space Force is preparing to create a converged digital and physical environment.

The U.S. Space Force is starting to create what they are calling the SpaceVerse. Already a trademarked named, the concept will unite the digital and physical realms to empower efficiencies and innovation in guardian operations and capability development, the service says. NASA's Communications Challenge

The space administration seeks industry help to inform space-based communication rules.

NASA is looking to the commercial satellite industry to provide fixed satellite services in low-Earth orbit as well as future mobile satellite services. However, the administration needs spectrum regulatory recognition for satellite-to-satellite operations from the world’s governing body, the World Radio Conference, to proceed. NASA illustration

The Forefront of Space Domain Awareness

Protection of U.S. and allied space-based assets hinges on robust situational awareness.

Space Delta 2’s inaugural 19th Squadron in Dahlgren, Virginia, will be performing cislunar domain awareness, a key new mission to surveil and identify both friendly and adversarial activity in the space beyond the geosynchronous orbit.
