Resources for Navigating Misinformation and Disinformation

Learn more about this advanced cyber threat through SIGNAL Media’s three-part podcast series.

The spread of misinformation and disinformation is a rapidly evolving cyber threat that has become more prevalent with the development of emerging technologies. Adversaries have used artificial intelligence (AI), deepfake technology and machine learning to spread misinformation and disinformation to weaken trust and damage national security.

To address misinformation and disinformation concerns and provide solutions to combating the effects of these cyber threats, AFCEA International’s SIGNAL Media created a three-part series of podcasts on the topic via “Disruptive by Design.”

The “Disruptive by Design” podcast invites emerging leaders to speak on technology trends and the challenges they pose for industry leaders and national defense.

The first episode in the three-part mis/disinformation series, “Going Beyond Fake News: Disinformation & Misinformation,” features Hannah Becker, co-founder of government strategic consulting business Becker Digital, and Maj. Trisha Wyman-Page, USA (Ret.), a leader in psychological and special operations for the U.S. Army Special Operations Command. The two experts explain how mis/disinformation is expanded by new technologies and how people can shield themselves from false narratives.

In the next episode, “Disinformation—The Influence of Foreign Actors,” Becker and Welton Chang, CEO of AI-powered social media intelligence company Pyrra Technologies, detail the difference between misinformation and disinformation and how foreign actors have used emerging technologies to influence democratic populations.

“Combating Misinformation Without Compromising Speech Rights,” the third podcast in the series, focuses on First Amendment-friendly measures that organizations can take to mitigate the effects of misinformation and disinformation. Andy Norman, the executive director of the Cognitive Immunology Research Collaborative and author of “Mental Immunity,” and John Gilligan, president and CEO of the Center for Internet Security, share their thoughts on the line between protecting free speech and ensuring true speech.

Along with the three “Disruptive by Design” episodes, AFCEA’s Cyber Committee published its March 2023 white paper, “Digital Chatter—The Growing Challenge of Mis/Disinformation, which inspired an AFCEA Solutions webinar of the same title. The white paper and subsequent webinar open the discussion on mis/disinformation by identifying the threat to democracy, explaining its proliferation via social media and suggesting ways to minimize the damage to society.

The more advanced technology becomes, the wider the door for information manipulation. AFCEA and leaders in cybersecurity strive to combat misinformation and disinformation through discourse and education because everyone is vulnerable to these unique cyber threats.

“Disruptive by Design” can be found on Spotify and YouTube. The Cyber Committee’s white paper is available for download via AFCEA’s Resource Library. The misinformation and disinformation AFCEA Solutions webinar is available on demand.
