Recruiting Young Servicemen to AFCEA by Vandenberg-Central Coast Chapter
Mike Anderson, President of the Vandenberg-Central Coast
Chapter, explained that a best practice of their chapter is
to recruit chapter officers and Young AFCEANs from the
military. By targeting lieutenants, they get the hard-
chargers excited about a project they can own, and show off
their leadership talents. For the young officers who need
some guidance, it is an opportunity to mentor them in
leadership that they may not get in their day-to-day job.
For the NCOs, it is more information that they can put on a
quarterly award, plus it allows them to get their younger
enlisted involved by them leading from the front.

Refining your Value to Corporate Sponsors by Vandenberg-Central Coast Chapter
Solidify your mission. We developed a briefing for the
corporate sponsors, and it really made us focus on what our
specific chapter was about. That focus is key to ensure you
are getting the important things done - you can't do
everything, so make sure you can do the things that really
matter.

Leadership for a Military-Based Chapter by Vandenberg-Central Coast Chapter
Get civilians involved. In my time here, the majority of the
chapter officers & volunteers have been military. Of the 11
active chapter officers I've had during my time, 7 have
either deployed or PCSed during their tenure. In addition to
the above, I have recruited a senior gov't civilian to be the
next chapter president.

Working with Exposition Contractors by Vandenberg-Central Coast Chapter
Worked out a deal with a tech expo contractor to provide a
donation back to our AFCEA chapter from the next tech expo.
I had done this at my last base, and recently finalized an
agreement to get money per exhibitor. Min work for the
chapter, we get a tech expo, and we get money into our
scholarship fund.

Personal Interaction with Corporate Sponsors by Vandenberg-Central Coast Chapter
Personal interaction with local corporate sponsors is a must
for a small chapter. In a tight fiscal environment, we have
seen corporate sponsorship at chapter events fluctuate. After
an all-time low of 1 sponsor for a luncheon, the VP and I
went out to the leadership of our local IT contractors to
present the case for our AFCEA chapter. We were successful in
recruiting a corporate member, got pledges of involvement
from several, and the next luncheon saw a high of 8 sponsors,
which helped fund a local STEM teacher grant. Also, solidify
your mission. We developed a briefing for the corporate
sponsors, and it really made us focus on what our specific
chapter was about. That focus is key to ensure you are
getting the important things done - you can't do everything,
so make sure you can do the things that really matter.
