AFCEAN of the Month, February 2023
Rear Adm. João Paulo Ramalho Marreiros joined the Portuguese Naval Academy in 1984. He specializes in hydrography and holds a Ph.D. in surveying engineering.
Adm. Marreiros has been a Portuguese Navy officer for over 38 years. Throughout his brilliant career, he assumed important functions as head of the Hydrographic Brigade; commanding officer of the hydrographic ship NRP D. Carlos I; head of the School of Hydrography; academic dean at the Naval Academy; head of the R&D Centre; director of the General Staff Course; and scientific coordinator of the doctoral program in military sciences at the Portuguese Military University Institute. Recently, he was appointed as general director of the Hydrographic Institute.
Adm. Marreiros has been an active member of the chapter. Last September, he handled all the coordination with the institutional entities for the realization of the Conference “R&D on Defense and the Sixth Annual Student Clubs Meeting in Portugal,” organized by the Portuguese Chapter in cooperation with the Military University Institute. In addition, he developed the necessary actions for the participation of experts from the Ministry of Defense, armed forces, navy, military and air force R&D centers. Furthermore, he involved industries and academia to present their R&D capabilities in defense projects.
