Chapters Offer Education for Maintaining Cyber Certifications

AFCEA International’s Continuing Education (CE) program has grown dramatically since its start in 2012.

AFCEA International’s Continuing Education (CE) program has grown dramatically since its start in 2012. The program primarily supports maintenance of CompTIA and Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) related to Department of Defense Directive 8570.01-M compliance but also fulfills some continuing education and cybersecurity certification maintenance requirements for the (ISC)², the National Contract Management Association (NCMA), the Project Management Institute (PMI), the Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS) and the Defense Acquisition Workforce. In addition, AFCEA Leadership Forums have been approved for George Mason University continuing education units (CEUs).

AFCEA members receive the additional benefit of formal attendance documentation for many sessions approved for certification maintenance. Emails documenting attendance have been coordinated with CompTIA and GIAC to ensure the documentation meets their requirements.

Recent program growth has been at the chapter level. In 2016, 14 chapters offered continuing education credit at events: Augusta-Fort Gordon; Bethesda; Central Virginia; Eifel; Fort Knox Gold Vault; Greater Omaha; Hampton Roads, Hawaii; Kaiserslautern; North Carolina; Palmetto; Tidewater; Wasatch; and Washington, DC. These chapters hosted 57 approved continuing education sessions in support of 29 events. Sessions included those hosted by the Augusta-Fort Gordon Chapter at TechNet Augusta and by the Hawaii Chapter at TechNet Asia-Pacific.

The Leadership Forums held at West and TechNet Asia-Pacific were approved for George Mason University CEUs.

Several additional sessions were recommended as support for continuing education requirements for the Defense Acquisition Workforce.

AFCEA’s continuing education sessions often include keynote speakers, panels and classes that justify attending conferences and symposiums because they support required certification maintenance. Don’t miss AFCEA’s CompTIA CSA+ Mini-Boot Camp on Thursday, June 15, from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Defensive Cyber Operations Symposium in Baltimore. The session provides five CompTIA CEUs.
