Military aircraft cannot rely on GPS, after Russia rendered useless many systems that depended on it during the war in Ukraine.
Inertial navigation system modernization, referred to as EGI-M by its developer, is among the candidates taking part in the next generation of navigation devices.
“The EGI-M capability developed by Northrop Grumman enables our warfighters to navigate accurately and precisely through hostile and contested environments,” said Ryan Arrington, vice president, Navigation and Cockpit Systems, at Northrop Grumman, a defense manufacturer. The company said that F-22 fighters would be candidates to lead in using this technology.
New developments like these have only passed testing stages and are not yet fully approved. The road ahead could be arduous, depending on the maturity of this research and the requirements from agencies like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
“We will also be certifying the equipment to the current FAA airworthiness standards,” Arrington added.
