U.S. Marine Corps Accesses New Command and Control System

Palantir Technologies Inc.’s system is meant to enhance warfighters’ battlespace awareness.

The U.S. Marine Corps announced Wednesday that in partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), U.S. Department of Defense Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) and Army Research Lab, the branch finalized a contract on August 15 with Palantir Technologies Inc. for a license for the data-centric command and control platform Maven Smart System (MSS).

According to the Marine Corps press release, all Marines will have access to the MSS platform, which is “complete with embedded advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and functionality across the spectrum of warfighting functions.”

Specifically, Fleet Marine Force units will have expanded access to MSS licensing within each Major Subordinate Command for tactical-level capabilities. Supporting Establishment will use the system more for training, integration testing and reach-back support.

“As part of Force Design, we've made a deliberate effort to support maritime domain awareness and joint fires integration,” said Gen. Eric M. Smith, the commandant of the Marine Corps, within the release. “This capability enhances intelligence, targeting and battlespace awareness to aid in faster decision-making, allowing us to sense and make sense more quickly.”

MSS is a mission command application and data integration platform that collects and aggregates data across command and control technology stacks to share a live view of the battlespace, enabling real-time decision-making through fully digital rapid sensor-to-shooter engagements, the release said.

The Marine Corps contracted the platform within five months of receiving a request from the Fleet Marine Force in an effort to accelerate the Marine Corps’ adoption of Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control capabilities.

The Marine Corps will also use MSS in its exercises. The I Marine Expeditionary Force has already leveraged the system during Balikatan 25, according to the release.

“The Marine Corps is at the forefront of adopting technologies that make our Marines more agile, adaptable and responsive to any threat,” said Lt. Gen. Jerry Carter, the deputy commandant for information. “Maven Smart System adds significant value to our ability to support the Joint Force and shows how the Marine Corps is demonstrating its ability to adapt to, harness and drive the changing character of war. We continue to look for opportunities to leverage AI and other emerging capabilities at speed and scale.”
