Army Adds Radio Network Capability to Ground Robots

The service will use Persistent Systems’ mobile ad hoc networking technology to connect to its backpackable robot.

The U.S. Army chose New York-based Persistent Systems Wave Relay mobile ad hoc networking technology (MANET) to equip the Common Robotic System-Individual (CRS(I)) program of record. The company will be part of the QinetiQ North America (QNA) team supporting the CRS(I) program. The Army made the selection in March, the company reported.

Weighing less than 25 pounds, the CRS(I) is a backpackable robot that dismounted users can carry with sensor suites for viewing and detecting threats to improve situational awareness on the battlefield.

In a statement, Leslie Hulser, director of programs for Persistent said, “We’re excited to, once again, deliver the Wave Relay MANET to the U.S. Army and help lead the drive towards networking the battlefield.”

The Wave Relay MANET allows a distributed group of fully mobile users to communicate continuously and efficiently without the need for fixed infrastructure. It is ideal for applications that require rapid setup.
