ACMI and EOS Collaborate To Boost 3D Printing Manufacturing Capabilities

Through the partnership, ACMI will acquire the world's first AMCM M 8K.

The American Center for Manufacturing & Innovation (ACMI) announced January 29 a new partnership with 3D printing technology company EOS to support advanced manufacturing and domestic production in the United States.

According to an EOS press release, ACMI will acquire EOS additive manufacturing (AM) systems and capabilities to expand ACMI’s industrial campus network, which consists of several multitenant manufacturing facilities used for research and development through full-scale production. The partnership will help ACMI develop and produce new 3D-printed capabilities on a larger scale.

“These new capabilities from EOS will play a key role in accelerating development and production timelines, delivering direct benefits to defense manufacturers and the American industrial base. This technology will help drive the factory floor of tomorrow—making American manufacturers more competitive and resilient across multiple sectors—while enabling the development of breakthrough products, hardware and machines essential to our national security. None of this would be possible without the partnership of a global leader like EOS,” said John Burer, founder and CEO of ACMI.

Specifically, ACMI has purchased EOS’s newly launched EOS M4 ONYX and the world’s first AMCM M 8K AMCM, or Additive Manufacturing Customized Machines, is an EOS company that provides customized 3D printing solutions based on EOS technology and processes.

The AMCM M 8K is a large-frame metal 3D printer, featuring eight lasers, advanced optical systems, thermal management that supports challenging materials like copper alloys and an 800 x 800 x 1,200 mm building volume, according to the release. The AMCM M 8K supports the production of rocket chambers, engine injectors and fuel tanks for aerospace and defense applications.

The EOS M4 ONYX has a build volume of 450 x 450 x 400 mm and features intelligent process control for large-scale additive production, according to the EOS website.

“This partnership with ACMI represents a major step forward in accelerating the adoption of AM as a core manufacturing technology for the United States,” said Greg Hayes, global senior vice president of Additive Minds, EOS. “By combining EOS’ decades of engineering expertise with ACMI’s vision for scalable production ecosystems, we’re explicitly enabling defense and aerospace manufacturers to move from concept to qualified production at an accelerated pace. The addition of systems like the AMCM M 8K and the EOS M4 ONYX into ACMI’s campuses give the U.S. industry access to capabilities that were previously out of reach, and we’re proud to support this mission to strengthen domestic manufacturing and national security.”
