U.S. Army Seeks $253 Billion for FY 2027 Budget

The budget request prioritizes personnel transformation across the force.

The U.S. Army released its official budget request for the 2027 fiscal year. Leaders are petitioning for $253 billion that will address several areas of the branch, including a thorough transformation of the force and an improvement in benefits for servicemen and women, according to Army Public Affairs officials.

The Army is asking for a 28.7% discretionary increase in procurement funding. Furthermore, this portion of the budget request includes a $3.1 billion ask to update the Army’s government-owned Organic Industrial Base sites, which are pieces of infrastructure that play essential roles in the production of munitions and equipment, per Army personnel. These specific funds will assist in developing and delivering groundbreaking weapons and bolstering the industrial space.

The budget request also advocates for a 5.3% bump in military personnel funding, meaning that if approved, all service members will receive a 5% to 7% pay raise for FY 2027.

Additionally, Army officials seek to propel the research and development forward, signified by their request to increase funding in the field by 12.9%. Army appropriations leaders will allocate a portion of this additional funding toward many investment areas, such as the MV-75 Cheyenne tilt rotor aircraft, the advanced M1E3 Abrams tank, counter-small unmanned aircraft systems and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, according to Army Public Affairs personnel.

Army officials added that the funding increases laid out in the FY 2027 budget request will help make the force more lethal, agile and ready for possible future conflicts, enabling the U.S. military to keep the competitive advantage and gain peace through strength.
