Description: About Technology Over Bagels:
TOB is a free monthly technical presentation that takes place on the second Tuesday of every month (excluding July and August). Bagels and coffee are available starting at 7:30, and the presentation runs from 8:00-9:00. Typical audience size is 40+. Speakers and attendees range from highly niche technical on-site engineers, consultants, company owners, and business development. TOB is run by Central Maryland's Young AFCEANs, and AFCEA membership is NOT necessary in order to attend.

Event Speaker: GraphQL is the Better REST
Abstract: GraphQL is a data query language developed by Facebook under MIT license. It offers a number of advantages for the development of Web services compared to the traditional REST approach. The talk will describe what REST pain points GraphQL is designed to address and describes GraphQL basic concepts and the ways to develop a GraphQL-based Web service. This talk was inspired by tutorials and presentations Michael attended during a recent O'Reilly Open Source Conference.

Speaker Bio: Mr. Smolyak has more than 20 years of hands-on experience developing enterprise software including lead roles in product-oriented and consulting environments. In addition to being a full-stack developer, he has led numerous efforts in the successful architecture, development, and deployment of Node.js, Java EE and Grails enterprise applications. Mr. Smolyak is an active learner and frequently takes online classes in such areas as data science, machine learning, programming languages, and AWS. He is knowledgeable about DevOps techniques and practices. Mr. Smolyak gained expertise in all stages of the object-oriented software development lifecycle. He possesses strong analytical and problem-solving skills and is an excellent communicator. Mr. Smolyak is knowledgeable about agile methodologies and software engineering best practice and is a Certified Scrum Master. Mr. Smolyak has experience in teaching and mentoring. Mr. Smolyak works as a Technical Development Editor for Manning (publisher of "In Action" series).
