Common Capabilities Link the Undersea Fleet

Common Capabilities Link the Undersea Fleet
The U.S. Navy is installing a network-based communications architecture to use bandwidth more effectively on a variety of submarines. The technology automates functions and requires less equipment and fewer personnel than current systems. The Navy recently declared the technology ready for the fleet.

Wireless Links Enhance Maritime Security

Wireless Links Enhance Maritime Security
U.S. Navy boarding teams in the midst of operations now are able to exchange information about their target vessels using high-speed commercial wireless technologies. A system funded by the Office of Naval Research and developed by the Program Executive Office for Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) has just entered the fleet and is allowing maritime security boarding crews to tap Navy databases and to transmit information from a boarded ship.

Command Swells With New Responsibilities

Command Swells With New Responsibilities
In the cell phone business, it’s all about the network, but in the military world, it’s about the information that rides on that network. The type commander in charge of the U.S. Navy’s networks set sail a mere five years ago, but in that short period of time, its mission has grown and shifted with equal emphasis on the security of the systems and the intelligence they carry. Along the way, the command has picked up a few new responsibilities, including becoming the primary authority to ensure the homogeneity of the service’s communications systems.

ARE WE SPENDING ENOUGH ON INTELLIGENCE? WE PROBABLY ARE!

ARE WE SPENDING ENOUGH ON INTELLIGENCE? WE PROBABLY ARE!
Well, the DNI implied back on 30 October that the United States will spend $43.5 billion on intelligence in FY 08 and the security of the republic seems not to have been impaired.

Innovation, Diversification Define CENTCOM Communications

Innovation, Diversification Define CENTCOM Communications
The U.S. Central Command is juggling new technologies with new missions amid joint and coalition environments as it fights adversaries that change tactics quicker than the command can upgrade equipment. Many of the command’s communication and information system requirements mirror those of other U.S. commands. However, the acid test of combat is highlighting capabilities and drawbacks of many new tactical systems in ways that could change long-range planning for defensewide communications.

Afghanistan Army Moves From Messengers to Microchips
The Afghan army is transitioning to a system that will send and receive secure Internet protocol-based communications, a major step forward from its previous process of delivering written material via messenger.

How can the defense industry capitalize on social networking and gaming theory?

How can the defense industry capitalize on social networking and gaming theory?
Trolling for Data Amid the Rise of Societal Roulette by Cmdr. Gregory E. Glaros, USN (Ret.)

Trolling for Data Amid the Rise of Societal Roulette

Trolling for Data Amid the Rise of Societal Roulette
Not long ago, network-centric warfare (NCW) theologians stated that the information advantage generated by information technology could provide a new competitive warfighting advantage on tomorrow’s battlefield. For the first time in the history of warfare, geographically dispersed forces would be completely networked and thus much more effective. Other terms soon followed to operationalize the theory, such as information/knowledge superiority and information dominance. These terms were operationally refreshing, philosophically mesmerizing and intellectually seductive.

Tactical Exigencies Heighten Information Sharing

Tactical Exigencies Heighten Information Sharing
In my commentary last month, I discussed information sharing, a topic that has reached virtually every organization in government and industry. This month I address command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) in the tactical environment. The two are closely related, as their symbiotic relationship virtually dictates that success in one is essential for success in the other.
