ERIE CANAL CHAPTER CHAPTER - Feb 26, 2008

In February, the chapter participated in the Mohawk Valley Executive Engineering Council's 59th Annual Engineers Banquet. David Ferris, civilian engineer, Information Fusion Technology branch, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), was awarded an Excellence in Leadership and Humanitarianism Award for his work during his deployment to Iraq. Ferris, a reservist in the U.S. Navy, was called to active duty and deployed to Iraq, where he was assigned to the civil military operations unit. His duties included developing, monitoring and evaluating support contracts. Ferris became an integral part of the humanitarian aid effort to provide support to Iraqi civilians, including joining the Army Civil Affairs. Through this organization, Ferris helped to provide food, water, shelter and medical supplies to displaced Iraqis. He assisted in the transition from U.S.-staffed medical clinics to Iraqi staff members. Ferris also is a volunteer at Hearts of Baghdad, an outreach program providing humanitarian assistance to medical clinics. While in Iraq, he coordinated with the AFRL in Rome, New York, and arranged to have supplies donated. The chapter provided funding to assist with the cost of shipping the supplies to Iraq.
