Science Teaching Award Presented

In May, the chapter presented $1,000 to both High Tech High North County and Rancho Buena Vista High School as winners of the chapter's Science Teaching Tools Award. Chapter officers also presented $1,000 senior scholarships to local seniors planning to pursue science and technology majors. This month, recipients included Geoffrey Leeds of San Marcos High School and Travis Smith of San Clemente High School. The chapter was very grateful to receive a $5,000 donation for the AFCEA Educational Foundation from the Florence Gunnarson Foundation. Craig Benson, director, U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps business development, AeroVironment, provided an informative presentation on small, unmanned aircraft systems (SUAS) and their use on the modern battlefield. He briefed attendees on current Marine Corps' requirements for SUAS, as well as how these systems are currently being employed down to the squad level in operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.
