SOUTH CAROLINA LOW COUNTRY CHAPTER CHAPTER - Dec 06, 2010

Teachers Receive Science Grants

Each year, AFCEA International sends the chapter $1,000 to award to a local high school teacher for the purpose of procuring tools for science classes. This December, the chapter awarded two $1,000 grants with additional support from its education fund. These grants are awarded based on financial need, and the chapter collected nominations from all Title One high schools in the area. The chapter awarded the grants to Michael J. Minnema and Heather Connelly. Minnema, a teacher at Baptist Hill High School in Hollywood, South Carolina, received his grant in his classroom. He requested the funding to procure two LabQuest Minis for $149 each to interface their Vernier probes with their Smart Boards; 30 keypad updates at $10 each for their Nspire calculators; some Vernier EasyLink probe ware replacements for $60 each; and several small probes to enable small group science experiments. This request impacted approximately 400 students. Connelly, a teacher at R.B. Stall High School in North Charleston, South Carolina, received her grant at her high school's Academic Achievement Award Program. She plans to use the grant to procure a Vernier LabQuest and probes with the ability to interface them with their current projectors and Smart Boards. This request would impact approximately 1,000 students.
